There are five truths that the Word of God teaches us about trauma and suffering.

1. God is present and in control of our suffering. In times of suffering and pain, we often wonder, where is God, why is this happening to me, has he forgotten me?

2. God is good and He cares for us. He loves us dearly and this is evident in our redemptive history. The creator of the universe made a way for disobedient, powerless people to come into an eternal relationship with him. He is patient and gracious. John 15:13 – Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

3. We are called to recognize that through our trials and suffering, we have an opportunity to draw closer to God. During the east times, we often become self reliant, and forgetting our need for God.

4. Jesus Christ understands what it is to suffer. We do not worship a distant, unapproachable God. We worship a God who knows what it is to be human.

5. Our identity is not defined by our traumatic events or suffering but is grounded in Jesus Christ our Lord. God does not see you as a victim but see you as his child. The Bible tells us, we were chosen before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love – Ephesians 1: 4
